In this area footprints of dinosaurs of the latter Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era, about 80~90 million years age, were found. During the Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic ear(from 144,000,000 to 66,000,000 years age) many lakes were formed in Yeongam and Jindo as well as Haenam, One lake was 150Km long and 50Km wide. Excavation in 1966 discovered that there was a crater lake formed by volcanic explosion in a 5kilometer area of Uhang-ri, Sinseong-ri and Maesan-ri. About 200 footprints of dinosaurs, birds with webbed feet, and Pterosaurs were identified, the first ones of these types found in the world. They have great academic significance as an international treasure house of natural legacy. |
