A headquarter site is a building constructed of stones or earth to protect a specific area and was also sued as the center of administration and military affairs. The Right Naval Headquarters was the naval command center of the Right Province of Jeolla-do. During the Joseon Dynasty, there were two headquarters for the naval commander. From Seoul, the west side was called Right Headquarters, and the east side Left Headquarters. The Naval Headquarters of Jeolla-do was first located in Daegulpo (the present Hampyeong), moved to Hwangweongot (the present location) in the 22nd year of King Sejong (1440), and then, in the 11th year of King Sejo (1465), was upgraded to the Headquarters for Naval commander. In the 10th year of King Seongjong in the Joseon Dynasty (1479), another headquarters (the Left Headquarters) was set up in Suncheon, Naeryeopo(the present Yeosu), and the former was called the Right Naval Headquarters. The Right Headquarters was built on high hills to the north and in a low area to the south. The southern walls, facing the coast, were built of stone, and those in the north of earth. The walls in the south are almost in ruin with some columns remaining in Scoe-ri and Seondu-ri. About 50meters of the west wall and 400 meters of the northern wall remain |
