This monument was erected in the 14th year of King Sukjong's reign(1688) to celebrate the victory of admiral Yi Sun-shin over the Japanese navy, taking advantage of the whirling water in the Myeongryang Strait on September 16 in the 30th year of King Seonjo in Joseon Dynasty(1597). The contents of the monument were composed by Yi Min-s´ë, former minister of National Affairs, and written by Yi Jeong-yeong, a renowned calligrapher in those days. However, 250 years later, in 1942, the Japanese colonizers demolished the monument. In Septerber 1945, the people living in this area rediscovered the monument, which had been located behind Geunjeongjeon, and moved it to Chungmu Temple on March 15, 1950. This monument, which is made up if a square-shaped foundation stone, on which a body stone with the head stone decorated with clouds and dragons on it is 267 meters high, and 114 centimeters wide. It was designated as a treasure in 1969. |
