Usuyong Tourist Resort |
| |
|
| |
Munnae-myon, located thirty kilometers to the southwest of Haenam-eup, is better known by the name of Usuyong. During the Choson dynasty, Usuyong was established here because it was the location of one of the three great naval victories achieved by Admiral Sunshin Yi during the Japanese invasion of 1592. This sea battle was called the battle of Uldolmok. The Usuyong tourist resort has also been established here. It consists of The Monument of Great Victory at Myongryang, the Usuyong castle site (Provincial Monument No. 139), and the Myongrang Victory Park. The area is rich in historic remains. The Usuyong tourist resort was designated a national tourist resort in 1986 with the purpose of commemorating the Great Victory at Myongryang achieved by Chungmugong in 1597 and also with the intention of restoring and preserving the appearance of the old castle site as a national education center. The first project was the construction of the Myongrang park in 1986 on a site which overlooks Uldolmok. The Usuyong is one of navy bases King Sejong established in the beginning of the Choson dynasty in preparation for the invasion of foreign enemies. In addition to this base, there were also Kyongsang Usuyong in Pusan, Kyongsang Usuyong in Chungmu, Cholla Usuyong in Yosu, and Cholla Usuyong in Haenam. |
