The beacon mound was a communication method to connect Chejudo Island with the land in the Chosun period. The beacon mound of Sajabong Peak is one of five beacons in this region. It is connected to the beacon of Mt. Choagosan in Kangjin-gun to the east and to that of Mt. Kwandusan in Hwasan-myon, Haenam-gun, to the west. From the tower above the beacon next to the summit of Sajabong Peak, you can get a view of the whole Tadohae Sea. You can see the islands of Nohwado and Pogildo in Wando-gun to the south.
When the weather is fine, the peak of Mt. Hallasan shimmers on the remote horizon to the west of Pogildo Island. Turning to the west, you can get a full view of more than twenty islands of different sizes, including Chindo, Oryongdo, Paekildo, Hugildo, Chodo, and East and West Gochados. The glow of the setting sun unfolds onto the surface of the waters and reddens Chindo Island adding a mysterious and fascinating beauty to Ttangkkut. You can hear the triumphant battle cries of the day when Admiral Yi Sun-shin and the loyal soldiers of Chollado provinces buried the Japanese invaders in the sea of Yunldolmok. Scholars and artists who refused to make a compromise with injustice and remained faithful to their principles would have come here tossed by the storms of life. And, they would have turned their steps at this edge with nowhere to step forward, refreshed with a dream and courage to start once again. It takes only ten minutes by car to get to the observation tower on Sajabong Peak, or about thirty minutes on foot along the path paved with stone from the village.
