The Location of Relics of Yun Seon-Do

Location : Yeondong-ri, Haenam-eup, Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do

This is the place Where Yun Seon-Do(1587~1671) ) lived. He was one of the greatest writers in Korean literature. He was called Yagi in his earlier times. His pen name was Kosan or Haeong. He became a junior official in government in the fourth year(1612) of King Kwanghaegun reign. When, four years later, he was a Confucian scholar of Songgyunkwan, which was the highest institution of education in the Yi dynasty, he was exiled to a remote area due to his written petition reproaching powerful statesmen concerning their oppressive behavior, Immediately after Injobanjong, which caused Injo to enthrone a new king in the fifteenth year of King Kwanghaegun's reign, he was released from exile and appointed head of Uigumbu, which was the supreme prosecutor's office.

However, he resigned very soon, but continued his research at this place. After he won the top prize at the special entrance examination in 1628(the sixth year of King Injo's reign), he became a tutor of the princes, Pongrim and Inp'yang, who were the sons of King Injo, He then served as several kinds of senior officials After the Chinese invasion in the lunar-calendar year of Pyongja, he retired on Pogil island at Wando and Sujong-dong or Kumswae-dong at Haenam. He significantly contributed to Korean literature as well as Korean landscape architecture, by making wood gardens and writing immortal poems such as 'New Songs from My Mountain Fastness', and 'Four Seasonal Songs of Fishermen'. In the meantime he served as a government official at King Hyojong's request, but was again exiled due to the struggle between political sectors. He died at the age of 85 in the 12th year of King Hyojong's reign. In the first year of King Sukchong's reign he was reinstated, appointed the chief of the Civil Office Board, and given the posthumous name 'Ch'unghon'. In this residence there is an old house of the family head of the Yun clan of Haenam, Nogudang house, Och'oun shrine including Kosan shrine and Ch'uwondang. In the exhibition gallery of relics there are valuable relics on display, such as the Self-Portrait of Yun Kong-Jae (National Treasure No. 240), Volumes of old paintings handed down in the Yun clan of Haenam (Treasure No. 481) Miscellaneous writings hand written by kosan(Terasure No. 482), and a document of Yun's servants in the 14th year King Chijong's reign (Treasure No. 483). Torreya trees on the ridge of the mountain are said to have been planed by Kosan's ancestors about 500 years ago.
