This pine tree saved the fortress during a minor Japanese invasion in May of the 10th year of King Myeongjong(1555). This event is called the Dallyangjin Incident and occurred 37 years before the main invasion. At that time, the Japanese army invaded Dallyangjin(presently Haenam-gun, Bukpyeong-myeon, Namchang-ri), and captured all the fortresses in Gangjin, Yeongam, and Haenam. However in Haenam, under the leadership of Governor Byeon Hyeop (1528~1590), the citizens bravely fought against the japanese to drive them away. Governor Byeon Hyeop was promoted to the higher governor of Jangheung, and a pine tree was planted to celebrate this event and was named Suseongsong(Victory Pine Tree). This tree, which is presently located in the front yard of the Haenam-gun Office demonstrates the strength of the Haenam people. |
