The History of Haenam County |

| |
The first culture to be originated in Haenam County was the Neolithic one. Relics of the Bronze age, such as dolmens and shell mounds, were discovered here. Our county was named Haenam-hyeon in the Goryeo dynasty. After 1985(32nd year of King Gojong in Joseon dynasty) it was called as Haenam-gun, and became the biggest county in Jeonnam province. Geographically, it is located at the end of the Sobaek mts, its mild oceanic climate is counducive to agriculture and fishing. |

Using striped earthenware men was appeared at Dumo-ri Hyeonsan-myeon in the post era of the Neolithic age. |

The period of three kingdoms |

The old counties, Saegum-hyeon, goseoy-hyeon, Hwangsul-hyeon wwere named in the 16th year of Baekche's King Seong (AD 538). |

The unified kingdom Silla era |

The three-hyeon names were changed respectively into Chimmyeong, Goahn, and Hwangweon. |

The Goryeo period |

The name of Chimmyeong-hyeon was changed into Haenam-hyeon, Goahn-hyeon into Juksan-hyeon, and Hwangweon-hyeon was promoted into Hwangweon-gun in the 23th of King Taejo(AD 940). |

The period of Joseon Dynasty |

Taejong 9th year (AD 1409): Jindo and Haenam counties were joined together as Haejin-hyeon. Sejong 19th year (AD 1437): Jindo and Haenam were separated and were set up again into Haenam-hyeon. County office was moved to current Haenam town.
Gojong 32th year (AD 1895): According to the reorganization of the national administrative district, Haenam-hyeon was promoted to Haenam-gun, Naju-bu. In 1896, county was reorganized again to Haenam-gun, Jeollanamdo (Jeolla South Province). Surrounding islands were separated from Haenam and incorporated to Wando-gun. |

Surrounding areas of Haenam were joined together and reorganized into 13 myeon in 1914. Haenam-myeon was promoted to up in 1955.(1 up and 12 myeon) Bukpyeong-myeon was divided into two, as Bukpyeong and Bukil in 1983. (1 up and 13 myon) Since 1992, our county consists of 1 up, 13 myeon and 513 ri as administrative units. | |
